Excavation at Korpberget June 15-18 June there is an excavation under way at Korpberget in Lycksele. On the vertical rock wall there are rock paintings that have been known since before. There a small elk figure can be seen, and a picture of a larger elk, which unfortunately is partially brokenan, due to weathering. There are also several large red spots where no figures can be discerned.
The rock painting is to be made more available. A ramp down to the rock is to be built. That is why excavations have to made, before construction begins, to make sure no remains will be destroyed. Around other rock paintings there have been various kinds of findings.
The first days were spent sifting through the remains of the last century in the form of shattered glass and a few coins. Otherwise, things looked bad at first, as far as archaeological findings were concerned.
However, on Wednesday the first findings appeared. They were Two arrow-heads of grey quartzite. These were preliminarily dated to the Bronze Age. The Nordic Bronze Age is dated back to ca 1 800-500 B.C.. The findings are considered quite unusual. The arrow-heads are eventually going to be analyzed in order to try to find out how they toended up at this spot. From other quarters there is evidence that arrow-heads have been shot at rock paintings. Such arrow-heads become damaged after they have hit the rock wall. No doubt this excavation is very exciting and we are looking forward to getting information about the results and the interpretations.
