Birger Nordin's famous Sami collection of art, objects and books can now be found at the Forestry Museum.

The collection is owned by Sparbankstiftelsen Norrland. The items have just arrived and are being worked on. A theme exhibition, displaying silver items is now available at the museum. From spoons, cups and belts to clothing details.

Collecting is travelling…

My collecting area is old Sámi objects, which is based on a genuine interest in Sámi culture. I observe it from an outsider’s perspective, since I am not a Sámi myself. I admire the ability of the Sámi to combine utility with beauty in their useful articles. In my collection there are objects from the 16th century up to the 20th century and originating from all the four Sámi countries. I am interested in everything from thimbles to Sámi sledges.

In the collection there is Sámi silver and books about the Sámi or Lapland as well as Sámi pictures, sculptures and picture postcards.
The cultural objects are, as we know, the basis for modern handicraft. Knives are always spectacular, but I would like to call attention to the traditionally female handicraft, pearl and pewter embroidery, root handicraft and hide products.

Collecting is for me to travel through time as well as space.
